Maths Learning in Room 8

Here are some games and activities we use in Room 8 to improve our maths.

One of our favourite games is Greedy.  If you have a die (dice) at home you could do this with a friend or family member.  See who is the most cautious and who is the greediest!!

Puzzles are a fantastic way to improve our maths.  This puzzle is not easily solved but a lot of fun to play with.

Snakes and ladders - an oldie but a goodie! Counting forwards (and backwards!)

Fraction and 3D puzzles.  Geometric and spacial challenges.

Challenge friends to a basic facts race.
Tangrams.  You could make your own puzzle and create your own silhouettes.

Organising and sorting.  Being the quickest to find the magician who has nothing in common with the one on the top of the stack.

So many card games improve our maths.  Fish for number recognition, 'speed' for forward and backward number sequences, memory, solitaire (finding pairs that equal 10) for 'tidy tens'.

Murtle the turtle - adding five.

  10. Hi Hamish. Thank you for your comment.
Greedy is played with one die (dice) and each letter of GREEDY represents a number on the die. G = 1, R = 2, E = 3 etc. (See the table we drew into our maths books).
Then the die is rolled. You roll four times (or five if you want the game to last longer) for each column.
If a one is rolled while you are rolling the numbers for the first column then you lose all your points (money) UNLESS you decided to bank it during that round. In our class we stand on our chairs to show we are banking money. Once you have decided to bank you cannot add any more numbers (money) to that column. Then after each round (column) you add up your score.
When you are putting the numbers into the second column (R) you do not want to see the number two rolled or you will lose all your money unless you have banked it.
The winner is the person who has the most "money" at the end of the six rounds.
    Have fun trying it out!!
