Learner agency

In Room 9 we have been thinking, discussing and trying out what learner agency is.

We have talked about how learner agency means the learner is in charge of the learning.

On Friday swimming was cancelled because of the weather.
After morning tea someone wondered....

Why do we feel hot and sticky when it is about to rain?

We investigated...
We asked Kiddle a question. (We use Kiddle to be cyber safe) The answer wasn't quite what we were after so we has to adjust our search.

We were getting closer but still not exactly what we wanted. We scanned and search to check out results.

Much better! This web search had a wonderopolis article.

Read the article here:

We read through and learned about humidity and the vapour in the air.

We had found our answer but wanted to investigate further about the weather in our area and the potential storm on the way.

Metservice is the meteorology (or weather) service for finding the weather in our area.
We learned how to read the short and long range forecast and what the symbols mean. Someone wondered if meteorologists could predict the future!
Then we looked at the actual and predicted rain forecast to see what weather we could expect.

The last part of the learning was watching the rain radar video to see where the weather was coming from and what parts of the country were getting the most rain. We can 'read' the colours to see how heavy the rain is.

Raedence was particularly curious and pleased to hear the weather would be mostly fine for Easter holiday weekend.

Phew! What a lot of learning that came from one I wonder.

Whaea Georgia loved to see curious wonderers who can lead their own learning.

Reading to someone

This week we have been practising the Daily 5 called 'Read to someone'.

In our class this looks like:
Elbow to elbow, knee to knee, the book in the middle so we can both see.

Reading books from our book boxes.

Talking about the books we have read.

Enjoying reading!

Writing in Room 9

Look at all the writers in Room 9.

Over the last few weeks Room 9 has been learning to write in lots of different formats:
We can write independently or with the teacher to meet set success criteria.

We can collaborate on Chromebooks.

Two people working together on one piece of writing.
